Inside the cabinet factory: how a gaming machine is actually built

A gaming cabinet looks like a screen in a box. It is in fact a regulated computing device wrapped in furniture, and building one involves more paperwork than metalwork.

Inside the cabinet factory: how a gaming machine is actually built

Key points

  • Every controller board carries a documented, verifiable software identity.
  • Assembly is organised around configuration variants, not model numbers.
  • Testing occupies more calendar time than fabrication.

The frame

Fabrication begins conventionally: folded steel, powder coat, panel fitting. The cabinet must survive a decade of continuous use, frequent cleaning and occasional impact, so the frame is engineered well beyond what the electronics require.

We are a furniture factory bolted to a software company, and the auditors are the ones who set the pace.

The regulated part

Everything changes at the controller. Software is signed and its identity recorded so that any inspector can verify, months later, exactly which build a machine was running. Assembly staff work to a configuration sheet that specifies not just components but approved firmware versions for the destination market.

This is why suppliers speak in variants rather than models. One platform destined for four jurisdictions is, on the factory floor, four different builds.

Testing

Burn-in, thermal cycling, display calibration and interface checks consume days per unit in sampling, and the certification process that precedes production consumes months. Fabrication is the fast part.

Out the door

Packing, freight and installation carry their own compliance load: seals, transport documentation and, on arrival, commissioning checks witnessed under the destination market's rules.

Build variants

Up to 12 per platform

Certification

Months, before production
